Great news for health-conscious Canadian restaurant goers! In a matter of months, your favourite restaurants will be offering you detailed nutritional information regarding the foods you know and love. To sweeten the deal, this information will be available in brochures in the restaurants themselves as well as on the restaurants' websites. Furthermore, restaurants will also identify menu items containing the ten most prominent food allergens to help safeguard restaurant patrons against possible allergic reactions. These changes are all part of the "Nutrition Information Program." The program, set to take effect by the end of 2005, is being initiated by the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association (CRFA) along with several leading Canadian restaurants.
The Nutrition Information Program is the brainchild of the CRFA Nutrition and Fitness Roundtable, which includes representatives from many popular Canadian restaurants in collaboration with Health Canada (http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca). When asked about the purpose behind instituting the program, CRFA Research and Communications Vice President Jill Holroyd stated, "The goal was to take a look at health and how our industry can be a part of a solution. Corporate chefs are evaluating menu items to determine what fits the profile of a lighter menu choice to meet the need of particular customers. We've taken the next step to make sure all the information is presented in an accessible way on the menu board." Canada is the first country to implement a program that will present diners with detailed health-related info in such a readily available manner.
According to the CRFA, 24 restaurant chains have already agreed to the voluntary program. Establishments whose specialties range from fancy sit-down meals to fast-food take out will be placing all relevant nutritional information right at the consumers' finger-tips. The list of chains already on board includes Wendy's, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King, and McDonalds just to name a few. A full list of the restaurants involved in the Nutrition Information Program can be found on CRFA's website (www.crfa.ca).
WeightWatchers.ca is working to add more Canadian restaurants to our Restaurant Guide. In it you will find POINTS values for hundreds of menu items at more than 50 popular eateries including Pizza Pizza®, Jack Astor's®, and The Great Canadian Bagel&153. If you have a favourite restaurant that you would like to see include in our database, please let us know by emailing us at foodrequests@weightwatchers.ca.
While WeightWatchers.ca offers POINTS values online, the CRFA nutritional information will be ready and waiting for you right at the restaurant. For those of you concerned about reviewing and comprehending nutritional info on the spot, fear not; the facts will be formatted similarly to the nutrition facts tables that appear on packaged food at the grocery store. "It makes consumers aware that this information exists and does it in a way that makes sense in a food service environment," says Holroyd.
We know what you're thinking; this sounds too good to be true. Naturally, the Nutrition Information Program does have a few hurdles, the largest being taking personalised dining preferences into account. To broker a smooth influx of this helpful information, the program will detail the nutritional value of menu items which are standard and basic. While the program will consistently cover most menu items, it will exclude things such as chef-specialties or seasonal dishes. In addition, the brochures as well as the online info will be frequently updated to adhere to that restaurant's current menu.
